Flowers are nice year round but many people don’t think to send them except for on special occasions – Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, etc. Sadly that’s why the cost is so hiked up – flower shops know that people will pay more on holidays so prices get seriously jacked up. Still, if you’re dead set on giving flowers this Valentine’s Day there are some ways to save.
Order early – I can’t stress this one enough. Leaving it until the last minute is dead crazy near Valentine’s Day. You’ll pay a lot more and have fewer flower choices if you wait.
Think outside the rose box – roses are awesome but pricy. Tulips, gerber and other daisies, lilies, and even rarer choices like a nice bunch of lavender or anemone are less expensive. Personally I like a nice mixed bouquet way better than 12 red roses (boring!).
Speaking of mixed – if you must have roses you can get some roses alongside of some other nice flowers for much less than a full bouquet of roses. For example, the pretty Petite Roses & Lilies and Crimson Petite Bouquet above both showcase roses but both are also less than $30 because of the other flowers mixed in. As you can see these are still perfectly lovely bouquets.
Go sans vase – you can almost always order Valentine’s Day flowers from a shop (for pick up) sans a vase or have them sent in a box sans vase for less. Florists hike up vase prices when they’re included which is lame because you can pick up a perfectly beautiful vase at a thrift store for a dollar or two.
DIY – Many food co-ops and grocers sell flowers in bins allowing you to pick and choose and create your own beautiful bouquet. This costs a lot less and you get to be creative. If it seems scary to design your own bouquet stick to one or two basic flowers plus some greenery. If you’re excited to get crafty check out a helpful floral design how-to.
Go simple – one or two roses in a lovely paper wrap alongside candy or a small gift still looks sweet and some people consider one rose even more significant than a dozen. Look how cute the two roses look above. Sweet and simple!
Go large! – If you know a bunch of people in need of roses, head to a flower shop or better yet a local wholesale rose shop and strike a deal. Many wholesale shops are happy to unload more flowers at once for less than they’ll charge for a small amount (say one dozen). Going large and buying in bulk can save you a lot if you find a shop willing to make a deal.
